Kathrine Switzer
In 1967, at the age of 20, Kathrine Switzer became the first woman to officially run the Boston Marathon as a registered runner.
Now, you must understand that in the late 60’s athletic and medical establishments were strongly against women doing tough exercise. Myths circulated that it could compromise fertility, or give women a masculine body and encourage competitive spirit (…god forbid).
Before the run Switzer was approached by men saying they were happy to see a girl running and wished her luck, while others asked her for tips on how to get their wifes interested in running with them. Switzer mentioned feeling proud in those moments before the run.
That feeling took a swift turn when a few miles into the run Katherine Switzer was violently assulted by the Boston Marathon manager who tried pushing her off the course and removing her number.
Despite being humiliated and made into a spectacle by journalists during the run Katherine Switzer finished the Boston Marathon.
In her book Switzer writes:
“I knew if I quit, nobody would ever believe that women had the capability to run 26-plus miles. If I quit, everybody would say it was a publicity stunt. If I quit, it would set women’s sports back, way back, instead of forward. If I quit, I’d never run Boston. If I quit, Jock Semple and all those like him would win. My fear and humiliation turned to anger”.
- How has she shown integrity: Kathrine Switzer has paved the way for women in sports by living authentically and staying true to her beliefs, even during the most challenging situations.
